Omega-3 and Fish Oil
Dr. Caroline Meyer, ND
You have probably heard that fish oil, specifically omega-3 fatty acids, are good for your health, but have you considered how fish oils can help your child? Actually, a lot of research has been done using omega-3 fatty acids for health conditions in kids, including depression, eczema, and ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder).
What Exactly are Omega-3 Fatty Acids? How Do They Work?
These fats are found in cold-water fatty fish like salmon and herring as well as certain types of algae and seeds. Since the human nervous system is composed of more than 50% fat, omega-3 fats are essential to its function. They also naturally reduce inflammation in our bodies. Inflammation plays a part in many health conditions, including those affecting mental health.
Should Your Child Take Fish Oils ?
What if My Kid Is Really Picky?
How Much Omega-3s Should My Child Take?
It is true that most children do not like to consume fish. So, their typical intake of omega-3 fatty acids is woefully low. Given the pollution of our lakes and oceans, it is not totally safe to eat a lot of fish. So, taking a fish oil supplement that is guaranteed to be free of pollutants and toxic metals makes a lot of sense!
Modern fish oils are not like your grandmother’s cod liver oil. They come in a range of flavours, textures, and formats. Many of our young patients love their fish oils!
Besides having allergies to fish or a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, there is little concern about taking fish oils. It’s important to take enough fish oil or plant-based substitutes to have a positive effect. Your naturopathic doctor or personal healthcare professional can recommend the right dose for you.
