What can Naturopathic medicine offer when you’ve just received a cancer diagnosis?

Dealing with a new cancer diagnosis can be extremely stressful for the person who is affected and their loved ones. Many people want to know if there are special diets or natural interventions that may be helpful. Unfortunately, the internet is full of information both good and bad. It’s difficult to determine if a herbal supplement or diet touted online is a good option or not. For example, several popular websites recommend juicing and/or a vegan diet to help “beat cancer”. Yet this can lead to protein malnutrition, which is dangerous since protein is a key nutrient to help the body stay healthy when cancer is a factor.

When prescribed by a qualified and licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND), specific vitamins, minerals, and natural health products can be taken safely and can help improve quality of life and mitigate the side effects of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. NDs always check to make sure that any supplement they prescribe is safe and is not incompatible with chemotherapy or any other medication that has been prescribed by your family physician, nurse practitioner, or medical oncologist.

Thunder Bay Naturopathic Clinic has been offering supportive therapies to patients diagnosed with cancer since 2012, including the prescription of high-dose IV Vitamin C treatments and/or mistletoe therapy when appropriate. Our clinic is proud to adhere to the high safety standards in the compounding and administration of IV vitamins and minerals, as established by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario.

Every person is unique and not every diet or natural health product is safe, especially when used alongside other medical treatments. Naturopathic medicine offers holistic individualized care. This means that we take into consideration your mental, emotional, and physical health, as well as the type and stage of cancer you’re dealing with and any other health issues. We treat your whole person and your safety is our first priority.
